110th Birth Anniversary of President Ton Duc Thang

President Ton Duc Thang was born on 20.8.1888 in My Hoa Hung village, Dinh Thanh district, Long Xuyen province (the former name of My Hoa Hung village, Long Xuyen town, An Giang province) and passed away on 30.3.1980, in Hanoi, at the age of 92.

When a child, he studied in his native village. In 1906, he came to Saigon to attend to Vocational training School and then worked for Ba Son shipping factory. In 1913, he went to Paris by ship to work as an employee in Toulon. In 1909, he was expelled from France due to his support to October Revolution. So, he returned Vietnam in order to participate in revolutionary movement.

Between 1920 and 1925, he took part in founding Secret Trade Union in Ba Son shipping factory. In 1927, he participated in Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association as a member of the South_s Party Central Committee. By the end of 1928, he was arrested and sentenced 20 years_ imprisonment in Con dao by French colonialist. Until 23.9.1945, he wasn_t released. Returning the land, he joined Party_s Regional Committee. After that, he was elected to the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and Vietnam Communist Party_s Central Committee in 1951. In July, 1960, he was in charge of Vice - President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. After President Ho Chi Minh_s death, on 23.9.1969, he was appointed to the President till his death.

President Ton Duc Thang_s life is a brilliant example on steadfast revolutionary spirit. He was a close colleague of President Ho Chi Minh and has made a great contribution in many fields to national construction cause deserving the belief and respect of the whole Vietnamese Party and people.

In order to remember his merit, Department General of Posts _ Telecommunications (DGPT) issues the stampset "110th Birth Anniversary of President Ton Duc Thang" with one value of 400d.

The stampset shows the portrait of President Ton Duc Thang on the number of 110 being stylized as a flag with the image of the nation_s industrialization _ modernization for the the past years that the President usually expected in his lifetime.
